Art Project, 2021

In 2018, some Chinese women, inspired by the #MeToo movement, began disclosing their experiences of sexual assault, thus initiating the #MeToo movement in China. As more women joined and shared their stories, the movement gained attention online. However, this was followed by political suppression and silence, causing the movement to eventually go underground in China.

In March 2021, artist Li Xinmo initiated the “WOYESHI” art project, aiming to engage with the #MeToo movement through art. The project is publicly released online, recruits participants, and facilitates artistic creation and dialogue. It provides a platform for participants to express themselves artistically and embark on a journey of healing through expression. Additionally, the project helps amplify the voices of women who have suffered sexual assault, allowing these long-suppressed and unspeakable stories to be heard.
