In 2018, inspired by the #MeToo movement, some Chinese women publicly shared their experiences of sexual assault, sparking the #MeToo movement in China. More and more women joined the movement and began to recount their experiences of sexual violence.
In March 2021, artist Li Xinmo initiated the “WOYESHI” art project, aiming to engage with the #MeToo movement through art. The project is publicly released online, recruits participants, and facilitates artistic creation and dialogue. It provides a platform for participants to express themselves artistically and embark on a journey of healing through expression. Additionally, the project helps amplify the voices of women who have suffered sexual assault, allowing these long-suppressed and unspeakable stories to be heard.
