Dead Water

Photography, 2011

This is a series of photographs highlighting water pollution. Seventy-five percent of China's lakes are eutrophic to varying degrees; 90% of urban waters are seriously polluted, and 60% to 70% of the total water shortage in southern cities is due to water pollution. A survey of groundwater in 118 large and medium-sized cities in China shows that groundwater is polluted in 115 cities, with heavy pollution accounting for about 40%. This series presents the state of water pollution through landscape photography. These green-filled landscapes depict waters covered with cyanobacteria due to pollution. These once vibrant rivers, now overtaken by algae, symbolize the deterioration of our environment. The green in these images is no longer a symbol of life, but a sign of death.
