The Face

Installation (canvas, oil-based crayon, light), 2015. Germany

The installation features a Muslim woman with her face veiled in black, revealing only her eyes. Her face is dotted with small holes, through which light shines from behind. When viewers look at her face, they are also looking at the holes; in other words, she can only be seen through these holes. This work examines the female body in relation to cultural taboos and places the female figure within a global cultural context for reflection. The veiled woman is not merely a representation of a Muslim woman but symbolizes something broader, existing in every corner of the world. The veil becomes a metaphor for various other meanings.
